I was looking forward to celebrating the 250th anniversary of Independence Day here in the U.S., but then it had to go and get co-opted by political bullshit. So now I'm just spending the day sleeping in, cleaning up from a camping trip, avoiding the record heat, making Chicago dogs, and finding ways to drown out all the flyovers here in D.C.

While I'm not in a festive mood myself, happy birthday nevertheless to my very strange, sometimes wonderful but often frustrating home. May this period just be an aberration we learn from and not one we get stuck in permanently...
