Micro-post #45: The Homophile Movement in the USA before Stonewall [Pride Month 2025 #6]

A thing to always remember about Pride Month is that while Stonewall is often the "ground zero" for queer rights, it fits in a much larger and longer history. Along with other protest actions, there were also other groups around when it occurred that were trying to further the cause and often these were part of the larger Homophile movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Without groups like the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis, much of the activism and the gains from the 1970s onward would've probably not occurred or would've occurred much more slowly than they did.


To provide more context (good, bad, or otherwise) to these groups, I'm making this micro-post with several videos and podcast episodes to spur further research into the subject if you're unaware of these groups' importance:
