An Unexpected Podcast I Like: "Science Fiction with Damien Walter" [Something Interesting #25]

Updated: Oct 31

Recently, I got sucked into listening to another podcast that’s been around for a while but also one I’ve overlooked since I didn’t care about science fiction until the last couple years. At first I was skeptical about it since my experiences with these kinds of blogs and podcasts tend to lean more reactionary/nerd-focused than I care for but Damien Walter seems to take a different tack with his YouTube and podcast series Science Fiction with Damien Walter than I’m used to hearing about with the subject. He can be a bit long-winded and I don’t always agree with his opinions (for example I actually like NuTrek, especially Strange New Worlds, and find Dune to be frustrating to deal with…), he at least seems to come at his subjects with a good amount of thought and introspection. What I also find interesting – and really unusual, to be honest – is that his videos and podcasts aren’t duplicates but companions to one another. Each video corresponds with the related podcast as if in conversation and it almost requires you to listen to both to get the full picture of where he’s going and how he’s getting there with his findings and conclusions.

To give you all a better perspective on what I mean, here’s a few examples of his topics with their corresponding video/podcast combos:

This one’s a doozy – each is over 2 hours long – but it goes in depth about the Fermi paradox and the “dark forest” hypothesis, neither of which I knew much about but find really fascinating/scary…
